Why are We Voting Yes?

1.   After Texas, North Carolina, and other red states rammed through extreme partisan maps without giving voters any say, Virginia has a responsibility to do our part so the overall U.S. House map reflects how Americans actually vote.
2.   The same Republicans attacking Virginia’s amendment never complained when Texas politicians drew their own districts in back rooms, with no voter referendum and no independent commission.
3.   Democrats in Congress have repeatedly tried to pass nationwide rules to stop partisan gerrymandering; Republicans blocked those bills, leaving states like Virginia to defend fair representation on our own.
4.   In 2018–2019, Republican leaders in the Virginia House of Delegates went all the way through the federal courts in Virginia and up to the U.S. Supreme Court trying to preserve racially gerrymandered districts that helped them cling to power — and they lost the case and then lost the House in the 2019 election.
5.   This amendment is temporary and expires after the 2030 census — it does not dismantle Virginia’s long‑term redistricting reforms, and after 2030 the regular commission‑and‑court process comes back for the next full redistricting cycle.
6.   Virginia voters have the power to fight back against a Trump‑aligned Congress that is openly promising a national abortion ban, attacks on voting rights, and rollbacks of basic protections — and this amendment helps make sure our blue‑leaning Commonwealth sends a delegation that reflects our values.
